Hooper, John

Hooper, John
(d. 1555)
   Bishop and Martyr.
Hooper was educated at the University of Oxford and he became a monk. After the dissolution of the monasteries in the reign of King Henry VIII, he went to London where he was converted to Protestantism. He was forced to live abroad between 1547 and 1549 where he became acquainted with the reformer Johann Heinrich bullinger. On the accession of Edward VI he returned to England where he was appointed chaplain to the Duke of Somerset. ln 1550 he was nominated Bishop of Gloucester, but, because he objected to vestments, he was not consecrated until the following year. He proved to be an excellent, conscientious Bishop, severe on abuse and generous to the poor. He also wrote the influential Godly Confession and Protestation of the Christian Faith. However, with the accession of the Roman Catholic Queen mary, he was arrested, imprisoned, tried and burnt to death for heresy. His martyrdom is recorded in John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs.
